Applying eyeliner: these are the do's and don'ts

If there's one makeup product that's indispensable, it's eyeliner. It can enhance the shape of your eyes, give your look more definition, and boost your overall look. Applying eyeliner isn't difficult—as long as you know what to do and what not to do. So, here are all the tricks, plus the best tips!

Step 1: Apply eyeliner to the waterline

Start by applying eyeliner to your upper waterline. Your waterline is the soft, moist part of your eye, just below your upper lashes. It's easy to apply by looking down. This subtle line makes your lashes appear fuller and your eyes more expressive, without creating a harsh line. Tip: Applying your eyeliner this way is also ideal if you have sunken or drooping eyelids!

Step 2: Apply eyeliner to the lash line

Next, apply the eyeliner along your upper lash line. Draw a line above your eye, from the outer to the inner corner. Place the line just above and between your lashes to make them appear darker and your eye slightly larger. Do the same under your eye. Again, start at the outer corner and stop when you're slightly past your pupil. After applying the eyeliner, check that you haven't missed any spots. Tip: Don't worry if the line isn't sharp or neat—you'll blend it later.

Step 3: Fade the color

Immediately after applying your eyeliner, gently blend the lines with your finger or a small eyeshadow brush . Note: do this immediately after application, otherwise our eyeliner will become smudge-proof and blending will be difficult. The big advantage is that our eyeliners are waterproof and wrinkle-resistant! So they stay put all day long.

Complete your eye look with a few coats of mascara on your lashes. Tip: If you have droopy eyelids, apply a few extra coats to the center of your eye. This will create a beautiful, wide-eyed look.

Common mistakes with eyeliner

Applying eyeliner isn't very complicated. However, there are a few things you shouldn't do:

  • Harsh lines: Don't apply too much pressure with your eyeliner. This can create harsh, unnatural lines—not very flattering.
  • Too far in or out: Don't pull the line too far in (towards your nose), too far out (towards an exaggerated cat-eye), or downward (towards your cheekbones). Just stay close to your natural eye shape for the best result.
  • Black line under your eye: a thick, black line under your eyes makes them appear smaller and makes your appearance look unnecessarily harsh. It also makes your eyelids appear droopy. This makes you look older, which is definitely not the intention!

Extra tips for the perfect line

  • Choose the right pencil: Use a soft eye pencil that glides easily and doesn't pull on the skin.
  • Which eyeliner color: Use natural colors (brown, bronze) for a softer daytime look, bright colors (blue, green, silver) for a striking look , and dark colors (black, anthracite) for an intense eye look.
  • Combine eyeliner with eyeshadow: If you're worried about smudging, you can apply a matching eyeshadow color over the eyeliner to keep it in place.
  • Set your eyeliner : If you don't want to use eyeshadow, apply a small amount of Setting Powder over the eyeliner and your eyelids. This soft, translucent powder is specially formulated to set your makeup and keep it in place.

Applying eyeliner when you're a little older

Even if you already have some wrinkles, you can still apply eyeliner. It's easier if you use your finger to pull the skin slightly taut towards your temples.

Make sure you don't start the line right at the outer corner of your eye, as this will make your eye appear droopier. Instead, pull the line slightly upwards, starting about a millimeter from the outer corner of your eye. This creates a visual lift. If you've gone too far, you can remove the excess eyeliner with a damp cotton swab.
